Introduction
Volunteering for a conservation expedition is not just a holiday; it’s your way to help make a difference. In return, we want to make your time with us a memorable and positive experience.
In January 2005 we created the ReefDoctor Volunteer Research Assistant Programme and began inviting small groups of volunteer research assistants (four people every six to twelve weeks) into our scientific team to help expand data collection and facilitate further development of our core programmes.
Volunteer Research Assistant placements enable you to participate at all levels of ReefDoctor’s activities:
• scientific underwater surveys, conducted in the Bay of Ranobe as part of our daily diving activities;
• fisheries surveys, carried out on the beach with fishermen and local traders;
• education ventures in Ifaty village, Ifaty school and with tourists;
• and camp management activities such as helping with our weekly shopping.
On arrival, research assistants receive two weeks training in science, diving, safety and general activities required for the day-to-day management of the ReefDoctor camp, equipping you for the rest of your time with us.
Volunteering for a ReefDoctor expedition is your opportunity to research coral reef ecosystems in an area of the world that remains relatively untouched by western culture and ideals - one of few such places left.
The diving in and around the Bay of Ranobe is stunning and while you’ll be conducting research work on dives, there’s always time to explore and see more of the local marine life - much of it will come to you.
In the calm waters of the lagoon you’ll see reef fishes and invertebrates including moray eels, mantis shrimp, octopus, cuttlefish and squid. On the exterior of the lagoon the marine life broadens with the possibility of seeing whales, dolphins, turtles, sharks, napoleon wrasse and giant grouper.
Living in simple conditions in a small fishing village and diving every day is an incredible life experience; you really get a feel for the everyday life of Vezo fishermen and their families.
