Dive insurance
While Reef Doctor.Org has no special affiliations with any one insurance company and cannot recommend a particular company, we have discussed our emergency medical evacuation plans with DAN (Divers Alert Network) and MEDEX. Both provide medical evacuation services for diving accidents and are aware of ReefDoctor, our location and our activities.
DAN cover can be purchased worldwide and MEDEX cover is available to residents of the EU through Divemaster Insurance, both have multi-lingual websites.

DAN is an international not-for-profit organisation that helps divers in difficulty and conducts scientific research aimed at bringing greater safety to diving. It is run on a membership basis (membership is open to anyone) and joining includes dive insurance cover for the duration of your membership - usually one year. There are different levels of membership and the insurance cover provided varies with each (the professional levels are for working divemasters and instructors).
In addition to dive insurance, all DAN members receive the DAN Travel Assist policy, which provides medical cover for non-diving related accidents or injury. Please note that this is not a travel insurance policy and does not cover possessions or dive equipment, cancellation or curtailment etc. so you’ll need to consider an additional policy for this.
Divemaster Insurance offers a range of policies to residents of EU member states. The main policies of interest are IDEC - the International Diver Emergency Card, a policy that provides scuba diving accident cover; Dive equipment insurance, and includes the option of cover for your camera and underwater housing; and Travel insurance, for short or long trips. The three policies can be mixed and matched depending on your needs.
Whoever you choose, make sure that you know if cover for your belongings and non-diving medical treatment is included, and consider purchasing this separately if it is not. For more advice on purchasing general travel insurance policies visit our links page.
