Introduction

Travelling to any foreign country means thinking about your health and safety. In tropical and developing countries this is even more important. Joining a ReefDoctor research expedition needs preparation and planning to ensure that you remain healthy during your stay with us. This is especially important since medical treatment and facilities in Madagascar are limited.

Although there are a number of public and private hospitals in the capital, only routine operations can be handled. If complex surgery is required patients will be medically evacuated either to South Africa or La Reunion. Your health insurance must include medical evacuation cover.

Preparation for your trip needs to begin 6-12 weeks before your planned departure with a visit to your doctor or a travel clinic to establish which vaccinations you need, malaria prophylaxis and general health considerations.

Since much of your time with us will be spent participating in our diving surveys, we also require that you have a current diving medical certificate and provide us with basic information about your health and any medical conditions / allergies.

As well as your medical preparation you will need to take out comprehensive dive, travel and medical insurance. This should include cover for medical evacuation by air ambulance and for diving to depths up to 30m (be sure to check any exclusions and make sure that your cover is adequate). Insurance advice
