PADI courses

ReefDoctor teaches PADI courses and all Volunteer Research Assistants must be a minimum of PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent to participate in our dive surveys. All ReefDoctor dive training is FREE to Volunteer Research Assistants, however PADI’s teaching regulations state that you must have the student materials required for the courses you will be taking. Below are details of the PADI courses that we are able to teach with details of what you need to bring if you’ll be taking courses with us.

Open Water

We ask all of our Volunteer Research Assistants to be certified as Open Water divers when they arrive. Unfortunately we do not have the facilities in Ifaty to be able to teach the full Open Water course. However, if you are not yet certified as an Open Water diver we can offer a referral course whereby you conduct the theory and pool training in your home country and complete a skills review and your open water dives with us in Madagascar (you should be able to get a reduction on the full price of an Open Water course for taking only the theory and pool training). For those of you wishing to take this option please let us know well in advance and arrange to arrive in Ifaty one week before the commencement or your volunteer placement.

You need to bring with you:
Open Water student manual, PADI RDP and a certification (PIC) card.

Advanced Open Water

Before anyone can participate in our diving surveys, they must be certified as an Advanced Open Water diver. The Advanced Open Water course is built in to our Volunteer Research Assistant training so don’t worry if you don’t already have it. Your training with us will be free.

You need to bring with you:
Adventures in Diving student manual, Deluxe Data Carrier, PADI RDP and a certification (PIC) card.

Rescue Diver and EFR

From March 2007 Volunteer Research Assistants joining us for 12 weeks will have the opportunity to be certified to Rescue Diver level, including the EFR course (First Aid and CPR) for free!

You need to bring with you:
Rescue Diver student manual, Diving Accident Management Work Slate, PADI RDP and a certification (PIC) card, and the EFR student manual and certification form (EFR-PIC).

For most courses it is sufficient to ask your local dive centre for a course Crew Pak, which should include everything you need, and a certification form (PIC).
