What to look for
There are many companies offering dive and travel insurance and you will need to decide what level of cover you require. You may need to consider buying more than one policy to meet your needs so look carefully at the different options available.
To decide if a policy will meet the needs of your stay with ReefDoctor make sure that you pay particular attention to the following:
• For any kind of medical treatment check that the cover is sufficient to allow evacuation by air ambulance.
• Make sure the policy clearly specifies the levels of cover provided for scuba related accidents and medical care.
• We recommend that you are covered for diving to depths deeper than 30m if possible - although ReefDoctor has a 30m depth limit, diving accidents occur because something has gone wrong!
• Check that there is no restriction on the amount of time that you may spend diving within your trip - some policies limit this to 2-3 weeks in any one trip.
• If you are bringing your own scuba equipment, check that it will be covered under the policy. You may need to declare it (and other expensive items like cameras or laptops) and get extra cover added. Some policies also have a maximum they will pay for any one item, so check first.
• If you need to, consider buying separate policies for your diving activities and for your general travel insurance needs.
When you purchase your policy, make sure that it covers your entire trip (not just your time with ReefDoctor) and any other countries that you might visit travelling to and from Madagascar. If you are planning to get involved in other sports on your trip such as surfing or skiing, make sure these are also covered. Finally, make sure that you disclose any current or pre-existing medical conditions.
